What To Expect
When you bring your pet in for emergency care, our first step is make sure your pet is stable. If your pet is stable a veterinary technician will do an initial evaluation of your pet and then a veterinarian will complete a thorough evaluation and discuss your pet’s condition.

In the event your pet is seriously injured or ill when you enter the hospital, a technician will immediately transport your pet to an area where he or she can be evaluated and care provided as necessary.

Of course, all care is approved by you before anything occurs so you always know what is happening with your family pet. Consider yourself part of our healthcare team. We will work together in deciding what is best for your special friend.

Because pets are unable to tell us what’s wrong we use diagnostic tests (see below for just a few examples) to determine your pet’s condition. The good news is we have a fully equipped laboratory that enables us to perform on-the-spot diagnostics such as:

  • Diagnostic blood evaluations (used to screen hundreds of conditions such as toxin, kidney, liver, systemic infection, anemia, or diabetes evaluations)
  • Digital X-ray (Used for bone fractures, intestinal blockage, bladder/kidney stones, cardiac or intestinal abnormalities)
  • Ultrasound (Abdominal and cardiac evaluations)
  • Endoscopy (in some cases, foreign body removal)
  • EKG (Cardiac function)
  • Blood Pressure (Cardiac Function)
  • Tonometery (checking for glaucoma in your pets eyes)
  •  Antigen/Antibody (testing for canine parvo virus and feline panleukopenia, pancreatitis, heartworm, feline leukemia, feline immunodeficiency virus)

Your pet’s veterinarian will let you know what lab work is required to be complete based on your pet’s history and behavior at home. The goal of doing any diagnostic evaluation is to know the exact problem your pet is having so that treatment can be directed at the problem. This step saves time, is more accurate, increase our veterinarian’s ability to treat your pet. After the appropriate diagnostic tests are performed, the veterinarian will present you with an estimate of treatment. While most treatments are completed while you wait, some conditions require hospitalization with continuous monitoring and patient support.

PET VISITATION

We know that your pet is a beloved family member and having your pet seen for emeregency care is difficult. If your pet is hospitalized, we encourage you to visit your pet while he or she is hospitalized with us. Not only will it provide you with some peace of mind, we believe that your presence is good for your pet. Please know that if you are unable to visit, your pet will receive lots of TLC from our staff. On rare occasions, we may recommend against visiting if we feel it will cause excitement that would be counterproductive for your pet’s care and recuperation. During your visit we request that you follow these basic guidelines:

  • Please do not give your pet any food or water without consulting with a technician or a doctor.
  • Please ask a technician or doctor before taking your pet for a walk.
  • Children are always welcome but must supervised at all times.
  • Often other family pets can visit. Please ask your doctor in advance.
  • You may bring favorite blankets, articles of clothing, or toys from home for your pet’s comfort.

If you have specific concerns or questions about the care of condition of your pet, please don’t hesitate to speak with one of our technicians. Also you may call us anytime during your pet’s stay to get an update.
